Dharmender Sharma, MBBS, MS, Anshuman Dev, MBBS, DNB, Sandeep Malhotra, MBBS, FACS, Gurgaon, India.

Background: Obesity has become a mammoth problem reaching epidemic proportions not only in the western countries but also in developing countries like India. It is the fastest growing chronic illness in the world today. After tobacco use, obesity has become the second major cause of preventable death in USA. It is estimated that 5% of Indians are morbidly obese. Bariatric surgery is only for significant and durable weight loss in morbidly obese patients.

Methods: A review of the recent literature pertaining to incidence of morbid obesity, bariatric surgery, and resolution of medical comorbidities with bariatric surgery was done on Medline.

Conclusion: Bariatric surgical procedures are an effective method to control morbid obesity and its associated comorbidities. But, each procedure has its own unique advantages and limitations and should be carefully chosen, properly performed, and diligently followed. It should also be kept in mind that these are not cosmetic procedures and should be used only when medically indicated and lifestyle modification efforts have failed.
