Juniya Bridgit Tomy MSc (Nursing)

Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in the industrialized world. It represents a high cost of society, both high expenses of medical care and as cause of disability for the productive work force. The population based strategy aims to lower the risk factors in the entire population through modification of life style and to avoid the prehospital delay. There is need to intensify the efforts in the field of health education to make the rural people highly aware of cardiovascular diseases to reduce the increasing morbidity in the years to come.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of planned teaching program on angina pectoris among middle-aged rural people (35-60 years).

Methods: An evaluative approach with one group pre-test, post-test, pre experimental design was used for the study. The samples were 50 middle-aged rural people selected using convenience sampling technique and the data was collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire.

Results: The mean post-test knowledge score (17.78) was higher than the mean pretest knowledge score (8.5). The mean difference between posttest and pretest knowledge score was significant (t49=18.39) (t49=1.68 at 0.05 level). There was no association between pre-test knowledge score and selected variables like age, gender, educational status, and socio-economic status.

Conclusions: Findings of the study have shown that the planned teaching program is an effective teaching strategy in improving the knowledge of middle-aged rural people regarding angina pectoris. (J Clin Prev Cardiol. 2013;2(2):60-3)
